Many viewers reported that they often encountered an embarrassing situation in which the 2D movie was very bright, but the 3D movie could not see the picture clearly. Why does this phenomenon exist?

  The reason is that some studios have a vague concept of screen projection brightness standards, and adjust screen brightness based on subjective feelings, resulting in a large contrast in screen brightness and unsatisfactory viewing by audiences. For example, a movie theater shows 3D movies on a screen with a width of 21 meters, and the screen brightness reaches 7FL (Volt-Lumbert), which can give the audience a comfortable viewing experience; and this movie theater uses the same power to play 2D movies. For movies, the screen brightness value is close to 30FL, which seriously exceeds the human eye's ability to observe images, causing strong discomfort and affecting the viewing experience.

  The study found that the best brightness for the human eye to observe the image is about 14FL, at this time the recognition of color, the feeling of image details and the comfort of the human eye are the best. Therefore, the American DCI (Digital Cinema Advocacy Organization) has formulated the screen brightness standard, and it is recommended that the brightness of 2D pictures should be 14±3fL, and the brightness of 3D pictures should reach 7±2fL.

  Therefore, NEC recommends cinema projection personnel to reasonably adjust the projector power according to the DCI standard when showing 2D/3D movies to ensure that the screen projection brightness conforms to the human eye's reasonable perception of image observation. This can not only bring the audience an excellent viewing effect, but also effectively prolong the service life of the projector.

  The question is, why the reasonable use of projector power can effectively prolong the service life of the projector? (Because laser projectors have become a new choice for many cinemas today, today we mainly discuss laser projectors.)

  Here I have to talk about the light-emitting principle of the laser light source: the laser is generated by the excitation of one semiconductor laser. The laser has thermal characteristics, and the normal service life is 20,000 hours, and high temperature will affect the stability and service life of the laser. The output power of the laser projector is realized by changing the driving current of the laser. When the driving current increases (that is, the output power is increased), the operating temperature of the laser increases, and in the long run, the aging of the laser will be accelerated; on the contrary, the output will be reduced. If the power is increased, the operating temperature of the laser decreases and the service time is prolonged. Therefore, different powers cause different operating temperatures, which in turn affect the service life of the laser light source.

  In general, when the brightness of the laser light source attenuates to 50% of the initial value, the projection effect is greatly reduced compared to the initial installation. Then, under different output powers, how long does it take for the brightness of the laser light source to decay to 50%?

  When the working temperature of the laser light source is within 25 degrees, if your light source output power is 100%, then your laser projector can be used for about 20,000 hours; if the output power is changed to 90%, it can be used for about 30,000 hours; Adjust the power to 30%, then you will have nearly 80,000 hours of use. It can be seen that the lower the power used, the longer the life of the laser light source.

  So, for studio operators, how to effectively extend the service life of projectors fundamentally? NEC recommends theater operators to start from two aspects: machine selection in the early stage and implementation in the later stage:

  1. In the selection of projectors in the early stage, the brightness attenuation of the laser light source should be considered, and a certain amount of redundancy should be reserved for the brightness of the light source of the projector, so as to avoid the poor projection effect due to the low brightness caused by the aging of the laser in the later stage.

  2. For users who have purchased laser projectors, it is recommended to adjust the usage power of 2D/3D films reasonably according to the DCI projection standard, and avoid showing 2D and 3D films under the same power, so that the 3D brightness is normal and the 2D brightness is too high, which will cause the audience's visual fatigue.

  Reasonable machine selection and use are not only an effective way to prolong the service life of the projector, but also a guarantee for the maximum profit of the studio.
