Today, the editor will tell you how to describe audio, how to distinguish those adjectives and terms and other things. You can also follow Din Tai Fung Audio WeChat public account to learn more. (Entertainment Audio)

A picture is worth a thousand words. Unfortunately, no pictures can clearly tell us how the sound is, so it is necessary to describe it with the help of words. However, in order to make the concise phrases expressive and resonate in part, it is necessary to elaborate first, otherwise, after a long time, you will still be half-understood.

The following is a supplement to some commonly used adjectives and terms:

  1 ※ Resolution

Anyone who has played with cameras knows that a good lens can take pictures with clear lines and layers. Audio equipment from the cartridge to the speaker system, all of which affect the resolution, even the signal cable and speaker cable are no exception, and even the cleanness of the terminals is related to the quality of contact. As with photos, resolution is layering. A good sense of hierarchy means a sense of depth; the distance and distance of the landscape in the photo are clear at a glance, and the auditory experience in the audio is that the sound has a clear sense of distance and distance - we call it the sense of three-dimensional space. But in terms of sound, we usually say that the resolution mostly refers to whether the fricatives of the "1" stringed instruments "2" the labial sounds of the vocal music "3" ensemble instruments are clearly distinguishable from each other.

  2 ※Three-dimensional sense of space

The three-dimensional sense of space is the meaning of three-dimensional. But in audio, unfortunately, "stereo" is mostly narrowly used to refer to whether the sound emitted by the left and right speakers at the same time is different. If so, most people will say that there is a three-dimensional sense, and few people pay attention to whether the so-called three-dimensional sense here is followed by a three-dimensional sense of space, that is, a sense of depth. This is why many people ignore the importance of swinging the speakers, always place the speakers against the wall, and only pay attention to the separation of the left and right sounds in the center and ignore the distance of the sound. Of course, this does not mean that it is not good to stick to the wall, but it depends on the characteristics of the speaker.

In addition to the placement of the speakers, the three-dimensional sense of space also belongs to the timbre. It is not difficult for hearing to distinguish the far and near positions of the sounding body. Therefore, if the treble is slightly weaker, the midrange is slightly stronger, or the time when the treble is conveyed is slightly slower than the midrange, the human ear will immediately perceive the difference between the high and the midrange. If the treble is strong, we will feel that the sound is flat without distance. In short, if the treble and midrange are of equal volume and speed, the sound will be flat.

Whether the treble is weaker and the sound speed is slower to form a sense of third-dimensional space? In principle, yes, but if it is weaker and affects the clarity of the treble, the resolution will be poor. So taking care of each other is a must.

  3 ※The response is smooth

The minimum requirement for all audio components is that the response curve measured by the instrument is a horizontal straight line. As far as the enlarger is concerned, the enlargement of a small thing should match the original image, just like the enlargement of a photo. If it is deformed, it means that the amplifier itself is distorted. Unsmooth response is the color rendering of the device itself, which sounds prominent or missing. The response curve of the speaker system measured in the anechoic room should also be as smooth as possible. There is no graph, that is, it is expressed by how many HZ to how many HZ +- a few dB, the smaller the +-dB number, the smoother it is.

The equipment has a good response and smoothness, which means that it is neutral. No matter how the equipment is matched, the timbre will not be changed, but in fact, it is impossible to do it in the sound.

  4 ※ Bandwidth

That is, the frequency range, which means that the equipment is designed to work within a certain frequency (sound wave). Is the wider the better? Not necessarily, but there is no doubt that it represents the progress of electronic technology. We do not need to be strict about the bandwidth characteristics of the amplifier, as long as it can faithfully amplify the signal and provide the required power, it is competent. However, the bandwidth* should not be narrower than the frequency range within the reach of the human ear, usually 20HZ~18KHZ, which varies from person to person, as does the speaker system.

The +-Db number after the bandwidth number is also important, which is the smoothness of the response described above. For example, the marked frequency range of speaker A is 50HZ~20KHZ+-3dB, -6dB35HZ35, and the marked frequency range of speaker B is 35HZ~20KHZ+-6dB. Just looking at the digital comparison, we know that the frequency ranges of the two are equal, but obviously the B speaker is not as smooth as the A speaker, because the B speaker is likely to be -6dB at 20KHZ, while the A is -3dB. If the frequency range of the C speaker is 20HZ-20KHZ+-2dB, there is no doubt that its response is smoother and wider than that of A or B, and the bass is more extended.

  5 ※Bass extension

Cartridges, turntables, CD turntables, amplifiers, etc. are all about bass extension, and speakers especially, because they allow us to hear the sound waves produced by electronics. Loudspeaker bass extension refers not to quantity but to quality. Listening to the 2, 30HZ pipe organ sound section recorded by Saint-Saëns' pipe organ symphony can be clearly heard, the hair can feel or the ground has a slight vibration, we can judge that the bass of the speaker is extended enough. Listening to the heavy, thick and thick sound of drums or double bass, we do not call it bass extension, because the bass emitted by these instruments should be above 30HZ.

Speakers with enough bass extension seem to have a common feature, that is, the low volume sounds a little insufficient. It seems that those with low volume and fullness cannot be extended, and those with extension and fullness cannot listen at high volume (such as those with transmission speakers) because they are limited by physical factors. Therefore, if you want to extend the bass with an equalizer, don't listen to it at a high volume (1812 Overture Gun Sound Fever + Equalizer = Speaker Reimbursement).

  6 ※ Bass rendering

Rendering means strengthening. Try the timpani, double bass, cello, bass, electronic bass drum of popular music and other music to see if the bass is rendered. Some speakers have enhanced bass design, because it is considered to be used in general households. This type of speaker is fashionable at moderate volume and below, but at a slightly louder volume, the bass is too fat and chaotic. The designer knew it but ignored it, because he knew only a few people would listen at such a volume. Therefore, when reading the review articles of the speakers, you should pay attention to the comments that the bass is too exaggerated, because maybe this pair of speakers is suitable for your mid-bass volume listening. If the reviews say the bass isn't enough, maybe it's just right in your small listening environment.
