The primary goal of any public address system is to get good language intelligibility, especially announcements and comments in stadiums are more important. In recent years, this kind of language-based system has been required to have sufficient frequency response to be applied to music playback. The main obstacle to the language intelligibility in large outdoor or indoor venues is that the reverberation time is too long and the second arrival sound formed by the reflection from the roof or wall causes the language intelligibility distortion. There is also the size of the opening of the waveguide (horn) of the general sound box; if the wavelength of a certain frequency is greater than the size of the waveguide opening, diffraction will occur. Generally, the opening size of the waveguide is only large enough to control the direction of female frequency sound. The deep male voice and low-mid-frequency sound of music are not controlled, and diffraction increases the reflected sound. Therefore, in a venue with a high mixing time, use a sufficiently large waveguide block to fully control the relevant audio frequencies including low and intermediate frequencies, and project the sound directly and single to the auditorium, improving the range that normally has reverberation. The language can be understood. The sound pressure has also been strengthened. Therefore, for large-scale waveguides, the first priority is to improve the mechanical strength and robustness of the waveguides to be used in this area. At present, it is generally believed that if the waveguide is large enough and has enough mechanical strength, it will be very heavy, so it is impractical.
When Funktion-One provided a sound system for the Millennium Egg in London, it made a major breakthrough in exploring and developing a horn with a composite structure. The MST horn combines a new design structure and material integration, strength, lightness, waterproof and excellent acoustic performance. This composite structure technology allows large-scale waveguides to be manufactured to make them practical. Coupled with Funktion-One’s unique paper tray drive load technology, the entire MST horn weighs only 65kg. With a waveguide close to 2 meters, with a special paper tray drive, the technology provides non-juxtaposed sound quality, sensitivity, high sound pressure, and directivity control. When the waveguide is combined into a vertical link, the pointing control can be adjusted from 1° to 22.5° to obtain the required sound pressure and sound coverage.
The MST horn has been installed in the ice hockey stadium and sled competition venue of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
